Police have launched a murder investigation after a man in his 40s was found dead in a car on a residential street in Newham, East London, in the early hours of Tuesday, August 18. Officers were called to St Bartholomew's Road at 3am following reports of a man suffering gunshot wounds while inside a vehicle. Despite the efforts of emergency services, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests have been made so far, and a crime scene remains in place with the street cordoned off.
Police Appeal for Information After Fatal Shooting
Detective Chief Inspector Dan Whitten, leading the investigation, stated: “Firstly, our thoughts remain with the friends and family of the man who has sadly died. We know this incident will cause concern in the local area, and I want to reassure the community that my team and I are doing everything we can to determine what happened and trace those responsible.” He added that an increased police presence will be visible in the area throughout the day as enquiries continue.
Whitten urged anyone with information or who witnessed anything in the early hours to contact police, saying: “Any piece of information, no matter how small, could be vital to our investigation.” The man's family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Crime Scene Cordoned Off on Residential Road
Forensic investigators were seen at the scene, with a significant cordon set up on the residential road. Photographs show a forensics officer walking towards the murder scene, and a marked police van stationed at the junction of Barking Road and St. Bartholomew's Road. A significant police presence was reported on Barking Road near the junction, with multiple marked vehicles in the area.
The incident has heightened concerns about gun crime in the borough, which has seen a series of violent incidents in recent months. Local residents have been advised to expect continued police activity while the investigation proceeds.
