Man arrested for attempted murder after Putney church stabbing

A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a stabbing outside a church in Putney. The victim, a man in his 30s, was treated by paramedics and London's Air Ambulance at the scene before being taken to hospital, where he remains. The Metropolitan Police said it is awaiting a further update on his condition.

Police called to Upper Richmond Road after 3pm

Police were called to Upper Richmond Road, which forms part of the South Circular, shortly after 3.10pm on August 19 following reports of the incident. Officers took a man in his 50s into custody on suspicion of attempted murder and launched 'urgent enquiries' into the circumstances.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said the two men are known to each other, and there is no wider threat to the public. A large crime scene remains in place between Charlwood Road and Ravenna Road on Upper Richmond Road, blocking traffic in both directions.

Road closure and bus diversions

Photos show a lengthy cordon and a forensics tent near Putney Cemetery, with a number of police cars and officers standing guard. Bus routes 337 and 430 are being diverted away from the area. The South Circular remains shut this morning.
