New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani Receives Mixed Approval in First 100 Days Poll

A newly released survey from the Marist Institute for Public Opinion indicates that approximately half of New York City residents approve of Mayor Zohran Mamdani's performance as he nears his initial 100 days in office. The poll, conducted between March 26 and March 31, 2026, shows that 48% of respondents approve of the job Mamdani is doing, while 30% disapprove and 23% remain uncertain.

Favorable Views and Optimism on the Rise

Beyond approval ratings, the data reveals that 55% of city residents view Mamdani either very or somewhat favorably. Additionally, 56% believe that New York City is moving in the right direction, a significant increase from October 2025 when only 31% felt the city was on track. This shift suggests growing optimism among the populace under the new administration.

Strong Perceptions of Leadership and Effort

The poll highlights positive perceptions of Mamdani's dedication and leadership. Nearly three out of four respondents, or 74%, believe that the mayor is working hard in his role. Furthermore, 61% say he understands the city's challenges, and a majority consider him a good leader who cares about people like them. Many also feel he is doing more to unite than divide the city.

Trust and Campaign Promise Fulfillment

Over half of residents express a great deal or a good amount of trust in Mamdani to make decisions in the city's best interest. Moreover, 60% of respondents believe he is fulfilling his campaign promises, which notably included pledges for affordable housing in New York.

Comparison with Predecessors

Despite these encouraging numbers, Mamdani's approval rating trails that of his predecessor, Eric Adams, at the same point in his term. In 2022, 61% of city residents approved of Adams's performance, compared to Mamdani's 48%. His rating is closer to that of Bill de Blasio in 2014, according to historical data. However, the poll notes that Mamdani outperforms both Adams and de Blasio among registered voters in terms of effecting positive change in New York City.

Poll Methodology and Expert Insight

The survey involved 1,454 New York City residents and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points. Lee M. Miringoff, director of the Marist poll, described the results to the New York Times as a good start, but cautioned that New York City doesn't give a honeymoon easily, and I think it's still a proving time for him. This underscores the challenges ahead as Mamdani continues his tenure.
