Four Jewish Volunteer Ambulances Firebombed in London Anti-Semitic Attack
In a chilling incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, four ambulances belonging to a Jewish volunteer service were firebombed outside a London synagogue. The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday morning in Golders Green, with the Metropolitan Police confirming it is being treated as an anti-Semitic hate crime.
Details of the Attack
The firebombing took place at approximately 1:40 am on Highfield Road, targeting vehicles from the Hatzola Northwest fleet. Footage circulating on social media shows three hooded figures approaching the parked ambulances before flames erupted from the site. The blaze engulfed the vehicles, accompanied by loud explosions that police believe were caused by gas canisters on board.
Superintendent Sarah Jackson, who leads policing in the area, stated: "We know this incident will cause a great deal of community concern and officers remain on scene to carry out urgent enquiries. We are examining CCTV and are aware of online footage. At this early stage, we believe we are looking for three suspects." No arrests have been made, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Community Impact and Response
The attack forced dozens of residents to evacuate their homes, with around 30 people taken to a local shelter. The Hatzola organization, a volunteer non-profit that has served the Golders Green community since 1979, provides free emergency care and transport for the Jewish community. Golders Green is home to one of the largest Jewish communities in the UK.
Local councillor Dean Cohen described the attack as "particularly chilling" and warned it would send "shockwaves through our community at a time of already heightened fears over anti-Semitism in the UK." He emphasized the urgent need for authorities to take stronger action against hate crimes.
Broader Context and Statements
Mark Gardner, Chief Executive of the Community Security Trust (CST), a British charity that protects the Jewish community, noted: "The antisemitic arson attack against Hatzola ambulances in Golders Green has obvious comparison to similar recent attacks in Belgium and the Netherlands." He confirmed no injuries were reported and that CST is assisting police with their enquiries, while thanking emergency responders and volunteers.
The London Fire Brigade deployed six fire engines and 40 firefighters to the scene, bringing the blaze under control by 3:06 am. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about anti-Semitic violence in London and across Europe, with community leaders calling for increased vigilance and support.
