A homemade bomb thrown during a protest outside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's official residence has been officially verified as a viable improvised explosive device that could have killed or maimed dozens of people, according to police authorities. The shocking incident occurred on Saturday outside the mayor's Upper East Side home, where an anti-Islam protest organized by far-right activist and Capitol rioter Jake Lang took place.
Arrests Made in Connection with Dangerous Devices
Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi were arrested yesterday and remain in custody in connection with the discovery of two suspicious devices during the protest. Investigators revealed that both bombs were wrapped in tape and appeared to be jars stuffed with screws and hobby fuses. Police have confirmed that at least one of these devices was a functional improvised explosive device.
NYPD Bomb Squad Confirms Serious Threat
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided crucial details about the investigation through a statement on social media platform X. "The NYPD Bomb Squad has conducted a preliminary analysis of a device that was ignited and deployed at a protest yesterday and has determined that it is not a hoax device or a smoke bomb," Tisch wrote.
She continued with grave emphasis: "It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death. Further analysis will be conducted, including on a second device." The police commissioner praised the bravery of NYPD officers who responded to the dangerous situation, stating they "ran towards the danger without hesitation and quickly apprehended the suspects."
Mayor and First Lady Unharmed During Incident
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his wife, First Lady Rama Duwaji, were inside their official residence at the time of the protest but fortunately escaped unharmed. A spokesperson for the mayor addressed the situation, stating: "Thankfully, the Mayor and the First Lady are both safe, though the events are a stark reminder of the threats they both face regularly."
Multiple Arrests at Controversial Protest
In total, six individuals were arrested during the protest outside the mayor's official residence. Two arrests were specifically related to the throwing of suspicious devices, while one person was arrested for deploying pepper spray. Three additional arrests were made for disorderly conduct during the demonstration.
The protest was organized by Jake Lang, a far-right activist who previously participated in the January 6th Capitol riots. The demonstration targeted Mayor Mamdani's residence with anti-Islam messaging, creating a volatile situation that escalated with the deployment of dangerous explosive devices.
Ongoing Investigation and Security Concerns
Police authorities continue to investigate both devices recovered from the scene, with the NYPD Bomb Squad conducting further analysis to determine their exact composition and potential destructive capability. The incident has raised serious security concerns about protests targeting elected officials' homes and the increasing sophistication of homemade explosive devices used in such demonstrations.
This violent episode represents one of the most serious threats against New York City's mayor in recent memory, highlighting the dangerous polarization in current political discourse and the real physical dangers faced by public officials. The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine if additional individuals were involved in planning or executing the attack.
