Republican Senator Publicly Calls for Stephen Miller's Removal from White House
In a striking public rebuke, Republican Senator Thom Tillis has demanded the removal of White House adviser Stephen Miller from his position within the Trump administration. During an appearance on CNN's State of the Union on Sunday, the senior senator from North Carolina explicitly stated that Miller "should go" and labeled him a significant problem for the administration.
"He's a Big Problem in This Administration"
When questioned by host Jake Tapper about Miller's role in the administration's immigration policies, Tillis responded unequivocally: "Oh, of course I do" believe Miller should leave his position. The senator elaborated that Miller demonstrates more concern for form over substance and wields disproportionate influence over cabinet operations.
"He is not worried about substance. He's more worried about form, but I also think that he has an outsized influence over the operations of the cabinet," Tillis declared. "And I believe we've got qualified cabinet members there that sometimes are doing less than what they want to, because of his direction and his outsized influence. He's a big problem in this administration. He has been from the beginning."
Pattern of Controversial Influence
The senator pointed to specific instances where Miller's influence has created problems, including his advocacy for pursuing Greenland as U.S. territory and his tendency to act impulsively without sufficient deliberation. "It was Stephen Miller who said it was the position of the United States that we should go after Greenland," Tillis noted. "And Stephen Miller, that's been repeatedly responsible for embarrassments for the president of the United States by acting too quickly speaking, first, and thinking later."
Despite his criticism of Miller, Tillis expressed support for Markwayne Mullin as the new Secretary of Homeland Security, believing Mullin would operate independently from Miller's influence. However, the senator acknowledged concerns about Miller's continued involvement in administration decisions.
Broader Administration Controversies
The criticism of Miller emerges alongside several other controversies affecting the Trump administration:
- Fox News utilized outdated footage of President Trump during coverage of a ceremony honoring fallen soldiers, concealing that the president wore a golf hat throughout the solemn event
- Global oil prices surged past $100 per barrel as Middle East tensions intensified following U.S.-Israel military actions against Iran
- UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer communicated with President Trump regarding military cooperation through RAF bases in the Middle East
- Court documents revealed significant reductions in Department of Homeland Security oversight capabilities under the current administration
- Former Trump associate Lev Parnas announced a congressional campaign as a Florida Democrat
- Environmental groups argued that Trump administration EPA rollbacks have inadvertently strengthened state climate accountability laws
Additional Developments
Other notable events from the weekend included confirmation of an explosive device thrown outside a political residence during protests in New York, Department of Energy assurances about temporary energy price spikes, a federal judge ruling against former USAGM leadership actions, and ongoing scientific discussions about extraterrestrial communication challenges.
The public criticism from a sitting Republican senator represents a significant development in the ongoing scrutiny of Stephen Miller's influential role within the Trump White House, highlighting internal party divisions over administration personnel and policies.
