Former Barnet Councillor's Sentencing Date Set for Child Sex Offences
Ex-Barnet Councillor Sentencing Date Confirmed for Sex Crimes

Liron Velleman, a 30-year-old former Labour councillor for Whetstone ward in Barnet, will face sentencing on March 20 after pleading guilty to attempting multiple child sex offences. The sentencing date has been confirmed following a postponement from its original February 10 schedule.

Court Proceedings and Judicial Decision

During proceedings at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court, District Judge Ashwinder Kaur Gill determined that Velleman's offences were too serious for magistrates' court jurisdiction. The judge noted that sentencing guidelines indicated potential for an 18-month prison term, which exceeds the sentencing powers available at the magistrates level. Consequently, the case was referred to Harrow Crown Court for sentencing.

Details of the Offences

The court heard how Velleman engaged in a Metropolitan Police sting operation that took place between December 3 and December 10, 2024. During this period, Velleman believed he was communicating with a 13-year-old girl and sent 21 pages of messages containing multiple requests to see what he thought was an under-aged child in her bra and pyjamas. He also transmitted images and a live video of his erect penis.

Prosecution and Defence Arguments

Speaking on behalf of the Crown Prosecution Service, Zahid Hussain emphasized the need for a deterrent sentence, stating that "paedophilia has reached epidemic proportions and is perpetrated by defendants like the one who sits before you."

Defence barrister Ali Hussain accepted the decision to elevate sentencing to crown court but requested reporting restrictions on certain case elements, citing concerns about discrimination against the Jewish community. These restrictions were denied because the defence had failed to submit the necessary forms.

Current Status and Conditions

Velleman, of Holdsworth Avenue in North Finchley, remains on bail with specific conditions. He cannot be in the company of anyone under 18 unless supervised by an adult aware of these measures. He has also been placed on the sex offenders' register.

The exact location for the March 20 sentencing will be confirmed closer to the date, as Harrow's court building is currently closed. Southwark Crown Court has been identified as a potential alternative venue for the proceedings.
