Christmas Benefit Payment Dates 2025: DWP and HMRC Schedule
DWP and HMRC Christmas 2025 Payment Dates

The festive season brings joy but also significant financial pressure, particularly for the millions across the UK who rely on state support. With the cost of living crisis continuing to bite, managing Christmas expenses is a major concern. Debt charity StepChange has warned that more than 14 million adults in Britain will find it hard to afford the celebrations this year, potentially leading to increased borrowing.

Key Payment Changes for the Festive Break

This year, Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall mid-week, triggering adjustments to the usual payment schedules from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The general rule is that payments due on a bank holiday will be made on the previous working day. This means anyone expecting money on Wednesday 25 December (Christmas Day) should see funds arrive on Tuesday 24 December. It is crucial to note that there are some differences between payment dates in England and Scotland.

Universal Credit and Key Benefit Schedules

Monthly Universal Credit payments follow a specific pattern. If your payment date is on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or Boxing Day, the money will be paid on 24 December. For payments due on New Year's Day, they will be made on New Year's Eve, 31 December. In Scotland, payments scheduled for 2 January will be paid on that day.

Other major benefits have aligned schedules:

Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), Maternity Allowance, and Personal Independence Payment (PIP) all share the same core dates. For payments due on 24, 25, or 26 December, the money will land in bank accounts on Tuesday 23 December.

For payments due on New Year's Day (1 January) in England, or 2 January in Scotland, the payment will be made on Wednesday 31 December (New Year's Eve).

Child Benefit and State Pension Dates

Child Benefit, paid by HMRC either weekly or every four weeks, is typically paid on a Monday or Tuesday. For anyone due a payment on Christmas Day, it will arrive on 24 December.

State Pension and Pension Credit payments are made every four weeks, with the exact date determined by the last two digits of your National Insurance number. Payments due on the Christmas Day bank holiday will be issued on the previous working day. The standard schedule is:

  • NI numbers ending 00 to 19: Paid on Monday
  • NI numbers ending 20 to 39: Paid on Tuesday
  • NI numbers ending 40 to 59: Paid on Wednesday
  • NI numbers ending 60 to 79: Paid on Thursday
  • NI numbers ending 80 to 99: Paid on Friday

Knowing these adjusted dates in advance can provide vital certainty for household budgeting during an expensive time. Planning around these confirmed payment days can help alleviate some of the financial anxiety associated with the Christmas period, allowing focus to shift towards family and celebration.
