Uninsured Driver Receives Prison Sentence for Fatal Crash That Killed Four-Year-Old Girl

An uninsured motorist who caused the death of a four-year-old girl after making a reckless overtaking maneuver has been sentenced to five years and four months in prison. The tragic incident occurred on April 14, 2024, when Mayar Yahia was walking home with her family from Eid celebrations in Birmingham.

Details of the Tragic Collision

Javonnie Tavener, 23, was driving a Vauxhall Corsa on Upper Highgate Street when he struck Mayar Yahia. The young girl was with her family at the time of the collision. Tavener initially fled the scene but returned approximately thirty minutes later. Two women were also seriously injured in the incident.

Tavener pleaded guilty to multiple charges at an earlier hearing, including causing death by careless driving, causing death while driving uninsured, and two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving. In addition to his prison sentence, he has been disqualified from driving for six years.

Family's Heartbreaking Tribute

Mayar's family described her as an extraordinary child who brought joy to everyone around her. In a statement issued through West Midlands Police, they said: "Mayar was full of love and always smiling, kind to everyone and made friends easily. She was cheerful and bright, and she brought happiness to everyone around her at home, in her school and her neighborhood."

The family added that there are no words that can truly describe how special she was or how much they miss her. "No one deserves to lose a loved one like this," they stated.

Police Response and Warning to Drivers

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes from the West Midlands serious collision investigation unit spoke after the sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court. He emphasized that Tavener made no effort to contact emergency services immediately after the crash.

Hughes urged all drivers to consider the catastrophic consequences that can result from split-second decisions on the road. He highlighted how this tragic case demonstrates the devastating impact of careless driving and driving without proper insurance coverage.

The case serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of responsible driving behavior and the legal requirement to maintain valid insurance coverage while operating a vehicle on public roads.
