North London Couple Receives Six-Year Sentence for XL Bully Dog Attacks on Boy
A married couple from North London has been handed a substantial prison sentence after their XL bully-type dog viciously attacked a young boy on two separate occasions, causing serious injuries that required surgical intervention.
Court Hears Disturbing Details of Repeated Attacks
Wood Green Crown Court heard that Perry Driver, 67, and Kim Driver, 58, were convicted of three counts of cruelty to a person under 16 years and two counts of being the owner of a dog which caused injury while dangerously out of control in a private place. The attacks occurred in 2023 and left the victim with significant scarring on both his arm and leg.
Prosecutor Katrina Charles presented evidence suggesting the Drivers' "failure to ensure Maverick's welfare needs" contributed significantly to the dog's aggressive behavior. The prosecution claimed the couple failed to properly feed their XL bully-type dog named Maverick and neglected to take him for regular walks, creating conditions that fostered dangerous aggression.
Victim's Trauma and Lasting Psychological Impact
In a powerful victim impact statement read to the court, the young boy described how the attacks continue to affect his daily life. "Every time I have to look at my arm or leg it brings back memories of the incident," he stated. "I don't like to have my arm or leg on show at all and I will wear long clothing."
The emotional testimony highlighted not only the physical scars from the attacks but also the profound psychological trauma that continues to impact the child's wellbeing and self-image.
Defense Arguments and Judicial Response
Defense attorney Poppy Cleary contested the prosecution's claims regarding the dog's care, stating that "any allegations of failing to feed the dog properly or take him for walks is not what the evidence was." She noted that both defendants expressed remorse for what had occurred.
Judge Timothy Godfrey delivered a stern rebuke during sentencing, emphasizing that the aggressive nature of XL bully-type dogs "was well known then as it is now." He specifically noted that the Drivers failed to train or care for their dog appropriately, directly contributing to the serious injuries inflicted on the boy during both attacks.
Sentencing Details and Legal Proceedings
The court heard that the defendants pleaded guilty to the two counts of being the owner of a dog which caused injury while dangerously out of control on the first day of their trial. They were subsequently found guilty of the three counts of cruelty to a person under 16 years.
Judge Godfrey sentenced Perry and Kim Driver to six years in prison, of which they will serve half under standard sentencing guidelines. Additionally, he disqualified them from having custody of any dog for 12 years following their release. The couple, described as being of previous good character, embraced emotionally in the dock as the sentence was delivered.
This case highlights the serious legal responsibilities of dog ownership, particularly concerning breeds with known aggressive tendencies, and underscores the devastating consequences that can result from inadequate animal care and supervision.
