Three West London councillors have written a letter to Lidl UK CEO Ryan McDonnell, urging him to protect staff at the Asda Twickenham store in Isleworth, which is set to close on June 5. Lidl plans to take over the store at Ivybridge Retail Park but intends to shut it for six months for refurbishment, putting 37 employees at risk of redundancy.
The letter, obtained by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), was signed by Councillors Salman Shaheen, Sue Sampson, and John Stroud-Turp. They implore Lidl to “be a good neighbour” and reconsider the decision to place staff on notice of redundancy. The LDRS understands that Lidl had initially agreed with Asda to transfer all staff under TUPE regulations, which protect employee rights during business transfers.
Staff at Risk of Redundancy
An email seen by the LDRS confirms that staff have been told they are at risk of redundancy because Lidl plans to close the store for six months. Asda expressed disappointment, stating that protecting staff under TUPE was a key factor in transferring ownership. The councillors’ letter highlights the importance of an affordable supermarket in one of Hounslow’s poorest areas, especially during the cost-of-living crisis.
Calls for Expedited Refurbishment
The councillors urge Lidl to expedite the refurbishment to avoid redundancies and ensure the community does not lose access to affordable groceries for an extended period. They also ask Lidl to pledge to protect staff jobs, terms, and conditions. Asda is working with affected employees to find alternative roles at nearby stores.
Lidl did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication. Asda reassured customers that they can shop at its Hounslow superstore or online.
