US House Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, has publicly called for Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to step down from his cabinet position. Massie's Strong Stance on CNN's Inside Politics
Appearing on CNN's Inside Politics on Sunday, Massie stated that Lutnick, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, "has a lot to answer for" regarding his ties to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Massie suggested that Lutnick should "make life easier on the president, frankly, and just resign." He drew a comparison to British political standards, remarking, "If this were Great Britain, he'd already be gone," alluding to how Epstein-related scandals have impacted figures like Prince Andrew and Peter Mandelson in the UK.
Revelations from the Epstein Files
The US Justice Department recently released approximately three million investigative files on Epstein, in compliance with the transparency law that Congressman Massie supported. These documents reveal several key points about Lutnick's interactions with Epstein:
- In 2012, Lutnick discussed visiting Epstein's private island, Little St James, located in the Caribbean. This was four years after Epstein's conviction for procuring a minor for prostitution.
- Email correspondence from November and December 2012 shows Epstein's assistant contacting Lutnick about potential meetings, with Lutnick responding with travel plans that included his family and friends.
- Although the files do not confirm whether Lutnick actually visited the island, Massie asserted on Sunday, "Look, Howard Lutnick clearly went to the island if we believe what's in these files."
- Additional emails indicate Lutnick invited Epstein to a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign and sought Epstein's advice on a local museum renovation in 2018.
Commerce Department's Response and Bipartisan Pressure
In response to the allegations, a statement from Lutnick's commerce department dismissed the calls for resignation as "a failing attempt by the legacy media to distract from the administration's accomplishments." The department emphasised that the Lutnicks met Epstein in 2005 and had "very limited interactions" over the following 14 years.

Democratic US House member Robert Garcia from California echoed Massie's demands, posting on social media, "Lutnick must resign or be fired. And he must answer our questions."
