Chalmers slams Taylor's One Nation deal as dangerous
Chalmers attacks Taylor over One Nation pact

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has launched a blistering attack on Opposition Leader Angus Taylor, accusing him of preferring a deal with One Nation over the Liberal Party, calling it a dangerous political gamble.

Chalmers' criticism of Taylor's strategy

In a video statement released on Tuesday, Chalmers said Taylor's willingness to align with One Nation threatens the stability of Australian politics. He argued that such a move would empower fringe elements and undermine mainstream governance.

“Angus Taylor has made it clear he would rather do a deal with One Nation than with the Liberal Party,” Chalmers stated. “This is a dangerous game that risks handing influence to extremists.”

Political implications

The treasurer’s comments come amid rising tensions over coalition negotiations. Taylor has reportedly explored options to secure a majority by courting minor parties, including One Nation, after the Liberal-National coalition failed to win outright.

Political analysts warn that a partnership with One Nation could alienate moderate voters and destabilize the government. According to a recent poll, 62% of Australians oppose any coalition involving One Nation.

Taylor's response

Taylor dismissed Chalmers' remarks as scaremongering, insisting that his priority is to form a stable government. “We are exploring all options to deliver for Australians,” Taylor said in a separate statement. “The Labor Party is simply trying to distract from their own failures.”

The opposition leader has not confirmed any formal talks with One Nation but has not ruled them out, fueling speculation ahead of the next parliamentary session.
