Bizarre Bedsheet Disguise Precedes Violent Iron Bar Ambush in City of London

In a truly strange case of workplace violence, a 36-year-old man has been sentenced to prison after wrapping himself in a bedsheet as a disguise before launching a brutal iron bar attack on a former colleague. The incident, which occurred in the City of London, was captured in detail by the area's extensive CCTV network, leading to the attacker's arrest and conviction.

The Eerie Disguise and Premeditated Assault

Javier De Brito Jardim, 36, of Bolney Street in Stockwell, was recorded on surveillance cameras in the early hours of December 1, 2024, covering himself entirely with a white bedsheet on Cannon Street. The footage showed him resembling a ghostly figure, apparently believing this bizarre disguise would allow him to go unnoticed as he made his way to Poultry in the City of London.

Once at the location, Jardim lay in wait at his victim's workplace, which was also his former place of employment. When his target arrived, Jardim ambushed him, raining down blows with a metal bar while also punching and kicking the man repeatedly. The victim managed to escape and immediately contacted emergency services.

Severe Injuries and Hospital Treatment

The attacked colleague was rushed to hospital where medical examinations revealed devastating injuries. Doctors discovered he had suffered a fractured skull along with a small bleed on the brain that required immediate surgical intervention. The severity of these injuries underscored the violent nature of the assault and the potential for even more tragic outcomes.

Workplace Dispute as Motive

According to police statements and court proceedings, the attack stemmed from a workplace dispute between the two men. The victim told investigators he suspected Jardim was responsible for the assault due to ongoing tensions at their shared workplace. It was alleged that Jardim had been drinking while on duty in mid-November and received a formal warning, which he believed his colleague had reported to supervisors.

The victim recounted that following this incident, Jardim ceased speaking to him except for one ominous exchange. When the victim asked if anything was wrong, Jardim responded cryptically with "You will see, you will see." Jardim was dismissed from his position approximately one week after making this comment, and the victim believes this termination served as the primary motive for the violent retaliation.

Attempted Escape and Arrest

Following the assault, surveillance cameras tracked Jardim carrying the white sheet as he traveled back to London Bridge bus stop. The next day, he attempted to flee the country, but City of London Police officers intercepted him at Heathrow Airport as he tried to board a flight to China. He was arrested at the airport before he could leave British soil.

Conviction and Sentencing

Jardim pleaded guilty to charges of grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon. In February 2026, he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for the premeditated attack. The conviction relied heavily on both the comprehensive CCTV evidence and the victim's identification of his attacker.

Police Statement on CCTV Effectiveness

Detective Constable Rowan Smith of the City of London Police commented on the case, stating: "Javier De Brito Jardim thought he could come into the City without being noticed. The extensive CCTV network across the Square Mile tracked his every movement, as soon as he got off the bus to make his way to attack his victim."

Smith continued: "Security footage picked up everything he did, there was no getting away from the cameras which spotted him covering himself with a bedsheet, carrying out the assault, leaving his victim seriously injured, and then leaving the City. Our warning to criminals; don't come into the City to commit an offence. If you do, you risk being spotted by CCTV cameras and we will track you down, arrest you and bring you to justice."

The detective also expressed gratitude to the victim for supporting the investigation, noting that his identification of Jardim enabled police to prevent the attacker from fleeing to Beijing and helped secure the conviction alongside the CCTV evidence.
