Amazon Delivery Driver Caught on Camera Stealing Family Cat in Yorkshire
A distressed pet owner in West Yorkshire has issued an urgent plea for the safe return of his family's beloved cat after an Amazon delivery driver was captured on video footage apparently stealing the animal from their doorstep. The incident, which has been reported to police, has left the family devastated and concerned for the welfare of their pet, who requires regular medication for a serious heart condition.
Shocking Footage Reveals Alleged Theft
Carl Crowther, a 53-year-old maintenance worker from Elland in West Yorkshire, discovered the alarming footage when reviewing his home security cameras on Tuesday morning. He had been expecting a package delivery on Monday afternoon while he was at work, but instead of seeing the driver leave the parcel, he witnessed what appeared to be the deliberate theft of his cat, Nora.
The video evidence shows the delivery driver approaching the property, picking up the cat from the doorstep, turning around, and walking away with the animal. Crowther described his reaction to YorkshireLive as one of "total shock and disbelief" when he saw the driver "shove her into his car."
Spontaneous Act During Delivery Routine
According to Crowther's account of events, the alleged theft appears to have been a spontaneous decision made during what otherwise seemed like a normal delivery. The driver arrived at the family home in Elland at approximately 2:30pm on Monday 19 January, when no one was present to receive the package.
"He doesn't get a response at the door as no one was in, so he looks for somewhere safe to put the parcel," Crowther explained. "He then clocked the cat." This observation suggests the driver noticed the feline before making the decision to take her.
Urgent Medical Concerns for Missing Pet
The family's anxiety is compounded by Nora's medical needs. Crowther has revealed that the cat suffers from a heart murmur and requires regular medication to manage her condition. Nora typically remains close to home and is not accustomed to unfamiliar environments, making her disappearance particularly concerning.
"We were really worried for Nora's safety," Crowther told reporters, noting that the cat had been missing since lunchtime on Monday. The family's concern grew when they realized she hadn't returned home, prompting them to check their security cameras for any sign of her whereabouts.
Police Investigation and Amazon Response
West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that a theft crime has been officially recorded and that inquiries into the incident remain ongoing. Meanwhile, Crowther has reported the matter to Amazon but expressed disappointment with their initial response.
"Their response was disgusting, asking what monetary value we'd put on the cat," he said. "How can you put a value on somebody's pet?" The family has emphasized that Nora is a cherished member of their household, not merely property with financial worth.
An Amazon spokesperson has acknowledged the incident, confirming that the company is conducting its own investigation and has been in contact with police authorities. The delivery giant has stated it is taking the matter seriously as it unfolds.
Community Concern and Ongoing Search
The incident has sparked concern among local residents and pet owners in Yorkshire, highlighting broader issues about delivery security and pet safety. Crowther and his family continue to appeal for information that might lead to Nora's safe return, emphasizing the urgency due to her medical requirements.
As the police investigation progresses and Amazon reviews its delivery protocols, the Crowther family remains hopeful that their feline companion will be reunited with them soon, bringing an end to what has been a traumatic and worrying experience for all involved.
