Officer to Face Court Over Fatal Christmas Eve Collision

A Merseyside Police officer has been formally charged in connection with a tragic incident that occurred on Christmas Eve three years ago, resulting in the death of a young woman.

PC Scott Thompson, aged 32, is scheduled to appear at Manchester Magistrates' Court next week to face a single charge of causing death by careless driving. The charge stems from a collision that took place on 24 December 2022.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The incident unfolded on Sheil Road in Liverpool at approximately 8pm. PC Thompson was operating a patrol car and was responding to an unrelated emergency call at the time.

Tragically, his vehicle collided with 22-year-old Rachael Louise Moore, who was walking home from her job as a carer. Emergency services pronounced Ms Moore dead at the scene.

Rachael Moore was originally from Derby and had been a university student in Liverpool. Her death sent shockwaves through the local community.

Independent Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The case was subject to a thorough investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). This probe was initiated following a mandatory referral from Merseyside Police after the fatal crash.

In an official statement, the IOPC confirmed it had consulted extensively with the Crown Prosecution Service throughout its investigation to assess potential criminal offences. This process ultimately led to the authorisation of the charge against PC Thompson last month.

The officer is now set to make his first court appearance on Monday, marking a significant development in a case that has been ongoing for nearly three years.
