Pickle Vendor Exits Fair Over Flag Display

Mt Olive Pickle Company, a major US pickle brand, has withdrawn from the Great American State Fair in Washington DC after discovering that a video shown at North Carolina's exhibit included a Confederate flag. The company, based in eastern North Carolina and known as the "#1 bestselling brand of pickles, peppers and relishes in the US," stated it was unaware of the flag's inclusion.

In a statement to local news station WNCT, Mt Olive said: "Mt Olive Pickle Company was invited to participate in the North Carolina exhibit for the Great American State Fair … as part of America’s 250th celebration. We are proud of our North Carolina roots, and we agreed to be a part of an exhibit, as presented to us, that would represent the best of our great state. Our company stands on values of human dignity, opportunity, and freedom."

Context of the Confederate Flag

The Confederate flag represents the white supremacist, losing side of the US civil war, which defended slavery. The video, reportedly 45 minutes long and published on YouTube, was about North Carolina's history and showed the flag for a few seconds, according to vehicle manufacturer Spevco, which also participated in the booth. The moment was captured in news footage that circulated widely. A Spevco spokesperson told The News & Observer that it "did not create, produce, edit, approve or select this historical video to be shown." The video was subsequently removed from the booth.

Notably, North Carolina did not fly the Confederate battle flag while part of the Confederacy. The video showed the flag while the host discussed the history of the state's flags. The Confederate battle flag, with its red field and blue X with white stars, has been co-opted by white supremacist groups.

Fair Faces Multiple Challenges

The Great American State Fair, a 16-day event associated with the Trump administration and Republican allies, has faced low attendance and extreme heat, sending at least seven people to the hospital. At least seven Democratic-governed states declined to participate, citing budget or scheduling constraints. North Carolina initially declined but was represented after companies stepped in with financing.

The Freedom 250 initiative, which organized the event, announced late Friday that the fair would start at noon on Saturday instead of 10am due to heat. Other celebrations in Virginia and Maryland were affected, and parades in Philadelphia and DC were canceled.

Irony and Broader Political Context

The decision by Mt Olive to pull out carries irony: Confederate troops were issued pickles and pickled vegetables as rations to prevent scurvy. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global pickle business is valued at over $26bn in 2025, with the US market share estimated at 35%.

Pickles are not the only food in the political spotlight. On Friday, Donald Trump declared a nationwide scallops day, tied to a NOAA action opening fishing on Georges Bank off New England, claiming it would create jobs. At Mount Rushmore, Trump spoke of communism as a "mortal threat to American liberty." Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, appeared to reference Trump as an authoritarian, stating: "Those ideals upon which our nation was built – they are strong enough to endure any authoritarian regime, but only if we reach for them."
