Influencer Killed After Accusing Husband on TikTok
Mothering influencer Sara Gilson, 43, joined a Netflix documentary trend on TikTok, revealing to her thousands of followers that her husband was a paedophile. Just 12 days later, she was shot dead in an apparent murder-suicide.
In one of her last posts, Gilson sat down, shuffled her chair, and stared straight ahead at the camera. The caption read: 'Preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary about my soon to be ex husband who I just found out is a pedophile. I wish I was joking.'
Incident Details
On July 23, a woman could be heard screaming amid what sounded like a gunshot coming from Gilson's home in Oklahoma. Emergency services received a call from her son, who had escaped the house and reached safety with a neighbour. The bodies of Gilson and her husband Jeremiah Duffey, 48, were found by their son, both shot dead.
The TikTok post followed a local parent filing a restraining order against Duffey after he was accused of grooming their 15-year-old daughter, who played on a youth basketball team he coached. According to a police report, Duffey allegedly kissed and touched the girl and was caught by another coach. The Owasso Police Department stated that the incident 'was witnessed by another team coach who immediately intervened and reported it to the juvenile's parent.' The child then revealed that Duffey invited her to his hotel room during a tournament trip and offered her money 'to keep her quiet.'
Previous Threats and Fundraiser
Gilson had filed a protection order against Duffey after he threatened to commit suicide and went on the run with a gun in 2021. An online fundraiser raised more than £24,000 for her children, describing her as 'an incredible mum who loved them fiercely, worked hard to provide for them and dreamed of giving them the best life possible. Her children were the centre of her world. And everything she did was for them.'
In the US, more than half of female murder victims are killed by partners or exes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
