Bahamas Police Re-Interview US Man Over Wife's Disappearance at Sea

Police in the Bahamas are set to conduct another interview with Brian Hooker, a US man whose wife, Lynette Hooker, disappeared at sea earlier this month. The request for further questioning comes after authorities extended Hooker's custody by 72 hours, a period that was due to expire on Monday evening. This effectively created a deadline for Hooker to be either released or formally charged in connection with the case.

Conflicting Accounts of the Incident

Brian Hooker has maintained that his 55-year-old wife, Lynette, fell overboard from their 8-foot hard-bottom dinghy on April 4th while they were traveling from Hope Town to Elbow Cay. According to his account, Lynette was holding the keys to the boat's engine, which shut off, and strong currents carried her away, causing him to lose sight of her. Hooker stated that he then paddled to Marsh Harbor Boat Yard to alert authorities.

However, family members have expressed significant doubts about this version of events. Lynette's daughter, Karli Aylesworth, told various media outlets that she does not believe her mother would "just fall" from a boat. Aylesworth suggested the incident might have been pre-planned, stating, "It doesn't seem like just some accident."

Background of the Couple

The couple, who had been married for more than two decades, operated several social media accounts under the name The Sailing Hookers, documenting their sailing journeys across the Caribbean on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Despite their public persona as adventurous sailors, text messages obtained by CBS News reveal that the couple had previously decided to separate before reconciling.

In January 2024, Lynette wrote to a friend, "We decided to call it quits. I'm not going back," adding, "It was real bad. I can't be out there with him." However, by February, she appeared more optimistic, responding to a friend's message with heart emojis and a thumbs-up.

History of Conflict

Court documents reveal a history of conflict between the couple. In 2015, both Brian and Lynette accused each other of assault during an incident where Hooker was intoxicated and had a bloody nose. Lynette was arrested and spent a night in jail, but a warrant was denied due to "insufficient evidence as to who started the assault."

Karli Aylesworth noted that her mother and stepfather had a "history of not getting along, especially when they drink." Lynette's mother, Darlene Hamlett, emphasized her daughter's extensive experience with water, telling the Associated Press that Lynette "grew up on water" and had always been "near lakes, on boats, sailing and swimming."

Legal Proceedings and Investigation

Brian Hooker was initially detained by Bahamian police on April 8th but has not been charged with any crime. His attorney, Terrel Butler, confirmed that Hooker is cooperating with police and has denied any wrongdoing. The ongoing investigation continues to examine the circumstances surrounding Lynette Hooker's disappearance, with authorities carefully reviewing all available evidence and witness statements.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the mysterious circumstances and the couple's public profile as sailing enthusiasts. As the investigation progresses, authorities are working to determine exactly what happened during that fateful boat trip in early April.
