A 17-year-old Massachusetts teenager has been charged with murdering his mother and younger brother after allegedly using ChatGPT to play out fantasies about killing his family. Arjun Aravind was detained last Wednesday, a day after police found Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and Siddharth Aravind, 14, dead in their $1 million home with 'obvious trauma.'
According to police, Aravind used the AI chatbot to explore 'theoretical ideas or fantasy stories regarding the killing of his family' just days before the deaths. The search history came to light after reports that the teenager had been exhibiting 'concerning behaviour' online.
Alleged Use of AI and Charges
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, who called the incident an 'unspeakable tragedy,' said in a press conference: 'He was engaged in the use of ChatGPT to create fantasy stories, Gothic novels, creating characters asking what about this, what about that, which appear to relate to threats to his family not surviving.'
Aravind faces two counts of murder, two counts each of assault and battery on a family or household member and assault and battery, and additional charges of using a vehicle without authority and motor vehicle theft. He was found asleep inside his mother's 2014 Honda Accord at 3:40 am last Wednesday, and prosecutors allege he purchased more than $2,000 in cereal and energy bars with her credit card after the murders, reportedly planning to resell them.
Discovery of Bodies and Investigation
The police report states that Aravind's father, Sukumaran, told authorities about his son's recent 'concerning internet activities.' He said his son had behavioural issues, had been diagnosed with autism, and had been banned from using a mobile phone 'due to some prior behaviour.' The father also said the online searches had led the family to hide knives in the home.
On the day of the murders, Sukumaran was away and called police on Tuesday evening to request a welfare check after a tutor reported being unable to enter the property for a scheduled visit. When police arrived, they found Siddharth by the stairs leading to the basement and Sudha's body in the basement.
Evidence and Court Proceedings
Assistant District Attorney Suzanne Wiseman told a Concord District Courtroom that it was 'apparent that blunt force trauma was used on both individuals.' Police found a bloody laptop in the house 'consistent with it being used during the assault.' Siddharth suffered severe head trauma, while Sudha had injuries to her head, face, and abdomen. When arrested, Aravind had cuts on both hands and swelling to his right, with 'presumptive blood on his hands and the soles of his feet.'
Aravind appeared in court last Thursday, showing no emotion, with hands and feet in chains. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf, and he was ordered held without bail. He will undergo a mental health evaluation before returning to court on September 11.
