Police in Delaware announced on Tuesday that a suspect who shot two people, killing one, inside a Wilmington hospital has been taken into custody. The 23-year-old man was apprehended in Philadelphia following a manhunt that ensued after the shooting prompted a lockdown at the hospital, forcing employees to barricade themselves inside rooms.
The shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. at Wilmington Hospital, according to city police chief Wilfredo Campos. He declined to release information about the victims' identities or the condition of the person who survived the shooting.
ChristianaCare, which operates the hospital, stated in an email that it was diverting patients from its emergency department and taking all appropriate steps to ensure the safety of patients, caregivers, and visitors. The lockdown was later lifted.
Late Tuesday, officials confirmed that the shooting was a targeted, isolated incident. Violence has been a persistent problem at hospitals across the United States.
Wilmington, Delaware's largest city with about 71,000 residents, is located approximately 25 miles south of Philadelphia.
