Stephen Fry Sues CogX Festival for £100k Over Fall

Stephen Fry has launched a £100,000 lawsuit against the organisers of the CogX Festival after a fall from the stage at the O2 Arena in London left him with a broken leg, pelvis, and ribs. The incident occurred in 2023 when the 68-year-old actor and comedian was delivering a speech on the impact of artificial intelligence.

Legal Action Filed in High Court

The claim, filed in the High Court, alleges that CogX Festival and the event organiser, Blonstein Events, were negligent in ensuring the stage and backstage area were safe. Fry, represented by law firm Fieldfisher, argues that the organisers failed to provide adequate lighting and protection to prevent a fall from height.

Details of the Accident

Speaking to Claudia Winkleman on BBC Radio in December 2023, Fry recounted how he bowed after delivering a lecture and walked off a part of the stage where there was nothing but a 6-foot drop onto concrete. He did not realise the stage ended abruptly, leading to the fall.

Response from Organisers

Keith Barrett, a partner at Fieldfisher, stated: “It’s very unfortunate that court proceedings were necessary, but the defendants do not accept Sir Stephen’s account of events, and we have had to ask the court to determine who is responsible for his injury and losses.” CogX Festival expressed deep concern over the incident and sent Fry their best wishes for a full recovery.
