Russell Brand Denies Additional Sexual Offence Allegations in Court Appearance

Comedian and actor Russell Brand has pleaded not guilty to two new sexual offence charges during a hearing at Southwark Crown Court in London. The 50-year-old appeared before the court to face one charge of rape and one charge of sexual assault, both alleged to have occurred in London during 2009.

Courtroom Proceedings and Brand's Response

When questioned by Sky News about his emotional state while entering the courthouse, Brand responded with a single word: 'Blessed.' He was observed carrying a blue-covered Holy Bible containing post-it notes. During the brief hearing, Brand spoke only to confirm his identity and enter his formal not guilty pleas from the dock.

These latest charges represent additional allegations beyond the five sexual offence charges Brand previously faced. Last year, he pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault. With these new additions, Brand now faces a total of seven charges: three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault.

Background of the Investigation

Metropolitan Police detectives initiated their investigation in September 2023 following multiple allegations from purported victims. The investigation gained significant public attention after Channel 4's Dispatches program and The Sunday Times published reports alleging numerous offences occurring between the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Brand has consistently maintained his innocence regarding all previous charges, asserting that any sexual encounters were 'consensual' and declaring 'I was never a rapist.' In previous statements, he acknowledged past personal struggles while denying criminal behaviour: 'When I was young and single, before I had my wife and family... I was a fool, man. I was a fool before I lived in the light of the Lord. I was a drug addict, a sex addict, and an imbecile. But what I never was was a rapist. I have never engaged in non-consensual activity.'

Specific Allegations and Police Statement

Court proceedings have revealed detailed allegations against Brand, including:

  • An alleged rape of a woman in a hotel room during a Labour Party conference in Bournemouth
  • An alleged incident where Brand reportedly grabbed a television worker's breasts and orally raped her after pulling her into a male toilet
  • An alleged assault where Brand purportedly grabbed a radio station worker's face, pushed her against a wall, kissed her, then groped her breasts and buttocks
  • Another allegation where Brand allegedly indecently assaulted a woman after grabbing her forearm and attempting to drag her into a male toilet

Detective Chief Inspector Tariq Farooqi of the Metropolitan Police, who leads the investigation, issued a statement on December 23 emphasizing ongoing support for the women who have made reports. 'The women who have made reports, including those connected to the two new charges, continue to receive support from specially trained officers. The Met's investigation remains ongoing, and detectives urge anyone affected by this case, or anyone with information, to come forward and speak with police.'

Trial Schedule and Legal Proceedings

The trial for all seven charges is scheduled to commence at Southwark Crown Court on June 16, 2026. The legal proceedings continue to draw significant media attention as both the prosecution and defense prepare their cases for what promises to be a closely watched courtroom battle.
