The high-profile murder case against Nick Reiner, the son of acclaimed actor-director Rob Reiner, has hit a significant procedural snag. A scheduled arraignment was postponed after his prominent defence attorney unexpectedly withdrew from the case.
Unexpected Withdrawal in Court
During a hearing at Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, 7 January 2026, defence lawyer Alan Jackson requested to be removed from representing the 32-year-old Nick Reiner. A judge granted the request, forcing a delay in the arraignment where Reiner was expected to enter a plea.
Jackson cited "circumstances beyond our control" as the reason for his exit but stated he was legally prohibited from providing specific details. He expressed confidence that the newly appointed public defender would capably handle the case.
Deputy public defender Kimberly Greene has now taken over as Nick Reiner's legal counsel. Following this change, the judge rescheduled the arraignment for 23 February 2026.
Details of the Case and Court Appearance
The hearing occurred roughly three weeks after the brutal deaths of Rob Reiner, 78, and his 70-year-old wife, Michele Singer Reiner. The couple was found with fatal stab wounds in their upscale Brentwood home on the afternoon of 14 December.
During his brief court appearance, Nick Reiner, wearing a brown jail suit and with his hair shaved, spoke only to agree to the delay. He stood in a custody area behind glass. Ms Greene stated she had informed Reiner of the change in counsel that morning and that he was "understanding" of the situation.
Legal Stakes and Family Response
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated his office would ensure the new defence lawyer receives all necessary case facts. He voiced strong confidence in securing a conviction, noting the charges carry a maximum sentence of the death penalty, which is a legal punishment in California.
The Reiner family released a statement through a spokesperson affirming their "utmost trust in the legal process" and declining further comment on the proceedings.
Alan Jackson, the departing lawyer, has previously represented other high-profile clients including Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey. He has urged the public not to rush to judgment, asserting the legal process will reveal the true facts.
