A gunman opened fire in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood on Tuesday evening, killing three people before being shot by police, authorities said. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was taken to hospital in critical condition.
Details of the Attack
Montreal police received multiple 911 calls around 8:30 p.m. local time reporting shots fired in the area near Decelles Avenue and Victoria Street. Officers arrived to find three victims dead at the scene. The suspect was located a short distance away and engaged by police, resulting in the suspect being shot.
Police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant said the suspect was armed with a handgun and that the incident appeared to be isolated. “We believe there is no further threat to the public,” Brabant said. The motive remains under investigation.
Victims and Community Impact
The three victims have not yet been publicly identified pending notification of next of kin. The Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood is a densely populated residential area with a diverse community. Local residents expressed shock and grief. “It’s terrifying that something like this could happen here,” said resident Marie-Claude Lefebvre. “We never expected this.”
Police have cordoned off the area and are conducting a thorough investigation, including reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses. The Bureau of Independent Investigations, Quebec’s police watchdog, is reviewing the officer-involved shooting.
Broader Context
Gun violence in Canada is relatively rare compared to the United States, but the country has experienced several high-profile shootings in recent years. In 2020, a mass shooting in Nova Scotia left 22 dead. Montreal itself saw a shooting at Dawson College in 2006 that killed one and injured 19. The incident has reignited discussions about gun control and public safety.
Quebec Premier François Legault expressed condolences on social media, calling the shooting “a tragic event” and thanking police for their quick response. Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante also offered sympathies, saying the city stands with the victims’ families.
