John Davies, 58, has been jailed for 14 years and six months after pouring boiling water over a police officer during an arrest in Birmingham. The incident occurred in his garden where officers had been called to reports of Davies cornering a man against a fence.
Attack on Officers
When questioned by a female officer about a weapon, Davies said 'Search me' before throwing the contents of a hot kettle at her. The officer suffered blisters on her shoulders, neck, and back. In footage of the incident, she is heard screaming: 'I need an ambo. I've been scalded with a kettle.' Davies also punched her colleague in the face, and it took several officers to finally detain him.
Court Proceedings
Davies admitted to maliciously wounding the police constable to resist arrest, as well as assaulting the man he had cornered. At Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, he was sentenced to 14 years and six months in jail, with an extended licence period of four years.
Aftermath and Statement
Both officers have since returned to work. DC Manpreet Sidhu said: 'This was a horrendous attack on two officers going about their duties. You can see from the footage that Davies put up a struggle, and it took many officers to restrain him so that he could be brought into custody. One of the officers involved suffered significant injuries and has only recently been able to return to work following this assault. No one should have to face this level of violence simply for doing their job and I hope the sentence delivered to Davies provides some justice for those involved. This will have a lasting impact on the officers, but now Davies is where he firmly belongs, in prison.'
