Essex Police have named the mother and daughter who died in a tragic incident at a beach on Mersea Island. Shelina Rahman, 41, and her 15-year-old daughter Sameeha, both from Ilford, were among six family members who got into difficulty in the water on Wednesday, July 22.
Details of the Incident
According to a police statement released on Tuesday, six family members—three adults and three children—were swimming together when they encountered distress. Despite significant efforts by all family members to help each other, Shelina and Sameeha tragically lost their lives.
A seven-year-old boy was airlifted to a nearby hospital and remains in a critical condition. Several other family members were taken to hospital for treatment and are now recovering.
Investigation and Community Response
Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher, leading the investigation, stated, "They had been enjoying a family day at the beach together when this tragedy happened. We are working to establish the circumstances which led up to this incident and our enquiries are ongoing." He added that specialist officers are supporting the family.
Chief Inspector Michelle Sparks, District Commander for Colchester, praised the community's response. "There were members of the public who rushed to help the family and I want to thank them for their courage and selflessness. Since this tragic incident we have also seen an outpouring of support and sympathy."
Appeal for Information
The family has requested privacy and do not wish to be approached. Police are urging anyone who was in the area at the time and has information or footage to contact them on 101, quoting incident 1090 of July 22.
