Liberal MP Garth Hamilton dramatically ejected himself from the House of Representatives after swearing during a dixer question on Thursday. The incident occurred while Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain was responding to a story in Nine Newspapers about allegations that Angus Taylor claimed authorities deliberately allowed the 2003 Snowy Mountains bushfires to burn because the area was wilderness.
McBain's Response and Hamilton's Outburst
McBain condemned the allegations, saying: "That is absolutely shameful. I am disgusted and so are the first responders who have come into my office to complain about it." As she spoke, Hamilton interjected with "bullshit," slammed his desk shut, and immediately began walking out of the chamber. Labor MPs shouted and gestured toward the Speaker, Milton Dick, to address Hamilton's departure. Hamilton raised his hand, gave a quick bow to the Speaker, and exited.
Calls for Naming and Further Disruption
Independent MP Zali Steggall called for Hamilton to be "named" under standing orders, which would result in a 24-hour suspension from the chamber. Speaker Milton Dick stated he did not see the incident but urged all members to reflect on their behavior and allowed McBain to finish her answer. Earlier, Liberal MP Andrew Wallace also left the chamber unprompted after making significant noise.
