A man has been charged with attempted murder following a stabbing incident in Golders Green, north London, that left two Jewish men injured. The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, prompted the UK terror threat level to be raised to 'severe'. The victims, Shloimet Rand, 34, and Moshe Ben Baila, 76, were attacked on the street in what police have described as a targeted incident.
Suspect Charged
Essa Suleiman, 45, from Camberwell, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a bladed article in a public place in relation to the Golders Green attack. Additionally, he faces an attempted murder charge for a separate incident on the same day on Great Dover Street, according to the Metropolitan Police. Suleiman is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court today.
Terror Threat Level Raised
In response to the attack, the UK's terror threat level has been elevated to 'severe', indicating a high likelihood of an attack. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, confirmed that the capital's threat level is now at its second-highest level. He urged Londoners to remain calm and vigilant, and to report any suspicious activity to the police. Additional officers, including armed units, will be deployed across London in the coming days to ensure public safety, particularly within Jewish communities who have been targeted and are feeling vulnerable.
Khan stated: 'Those who seek to harm and divide us through barbaric acts of terrorism will never succeed. We will never be cowed by terrorism.'
Investigation Ongoing
The Counter Terrorism Policing unit is leading the investigation into the Golders Green stabbing. Authorities are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack and any potential links to other incidents. The Jewish community in London has been advised to remain cautious, and community leaders have called for unity and resilience in the face of such violence.
This incident has sparked widespread concern and condemnation from political leaders and community groups across the UK. The government has reiterated its commitment to combating anti-Semitism and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
