Belfast stabbing victim wakes from coma, may lose sight

The parents of Belfast knife victim Stephen Ogilvie have revealed he may be left blind after the attack that sparked violent riots across the city. Ogilvie, 44, has woken from an induced coma in hospital following a stabbing to the face and eyes, his family confirmed on Wednesday.

Family Statement on GoFundMe

In a statement on a GoFundMe page, his parents said: 'On behalf of our family, we would like to sincerely thank everyone who has donated, shared this fundraiser, and kept Stephen in their thoughts and prayers. We are relieved to share that Stephen is now out of his induced coma and continuing his recovery, although he still faces significant challenges ahead.'

They added: 'The funds raised will help provide Stephen with the equipment, support, and everyday items he may need as he adjusts to life following this attack. With the loss of sight in his left eye and the possibility of losing sight in his right eye, your generosity will make a real difference to his future quality of life.'

The Attack and Aftermath

Ogilvie suffered 'significant injuries' including the loss of an eye after he was allegedly attacked by 30-year-old Hadi Alodid on Monday. The incident triggered a wave of violent protests across Belfast, with buses set on fire, homes deliberately targeted, and schools and businesses forced to close.

Maitui Mag Tighearnan, hailed as the 'Hero of Belfast' for intervening with his son's hurling bat to stop the attack, donated £10,000 to the victim as promised.

Court Proceedings

Alodid has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with attempted murder, possession of a bladed article in a public place, and threats to kill.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
