Summer Flees Coronation Street as Police Close In on Murder Suspect
Summer Flees Coronation Street as Police Close In

Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) makes a desperate attempt to flee Weatherfield as Detective Sergeant Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers) begins to suspect her of murdering Theo Silverton (James Cartwright). The young woman's decision to run away comes after a series of events that make her appear increasingly guilty, even if she is innocent.

The Journal Discovery

Before being questioned at the police station, Summer finds herself in a difficult situation when George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) discovers her private journal. Upon reading it, he is alarmed to find a page describing the act of putting a gun to Theo's head. This discovery sends Summer into a panic.

Harriet Bibby, who plays Summer, explained her character's state of mind: "I think she's definitely panicked. Everyone who was linked to Theo in any way isn't thinking rationally at all right now. Everyone is just trying to keep their head above water and stay out of suspicion. Then with the discovery of this private journal that Summer scribbles her thoughts into, I think she is panicked because she knows that it looks really bad. Whether she's guilty or innocent, this journal is not a good thing for anybody else to see, because it does implicate her. So I think that she is scrambling and clutching at straws of how to get around this, to get around the fact that they found this journal containing her darkest thoughts."

Questioning at the Station

After a tense period at the police station, Summer is once again put in the spotlight when George questions her about Theo's death. A flashback reveals what George witnessed on the crucial night. Summer becomes furious and immediately accuses George of killing Theo. However, the situation worsens when George informs Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins) that he has told the police about Summer's lies.

Christina remarks that it will only be a matter of time before the authorities come after Summer. Panicking, Summer heads for the door and bumps into Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce), who notices she is carrying a bag. She explains that she fears the police will arrest her for Theo's murder and plans to return to her university in America.

Will She Escape?

Summer intends to fly out that afternoon, but whether she will make her getaway remains uncertain. The question lingers: is Summer running away because she does not want to go to prison as an innocent person, or is she trying to get away with murder?

Harriet Bibby elaborated: "There are a number of things that are stacking up against Summer and the story that she has told so far. When she knows that the police are potentially on her tail, I think she just isn't thinking logically and so decides that the best solution for that is for her to just run away. I think she needs to get out of the pressure cooker. Even without Theo's murder, the last few years on the street have been horrible and traumatic for Summer. Then to pile this on top, I think she just sort of explodes and isn't thinking logically and feels like she needs to run away."
