Rubio Warns NATO Allies Denying US Base Access Could Threaten Alliance
Rubio: Denying US Bases in NATO 'a Problem'

US Senator Marco Rubio has issued a strong warning to NATO allies, stating that refusal to allow the United States to use its bases for force projection could threaten the alliance. Speaking on August 13, Rubio addressed questions about his meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni amid President Donald Trump's threats to withdraw US troops from Europe.

Rubio's Stance on NATO

Rubio emphasized that he has been a consistent supporter of NATO throughout his Senate career and continues to be. However, he highlighted a key issue: the ability to use bases in Europe for logistical support during contingencies. He cited Spain as an example where permission was denied for a critical mission, which he said impeded the operation and created unnecessary dangers.

Implications of Denied Access

Rubio stated bluntly: 'If one of the main reasons why the US is in NATO is the ability to have forces deployed in Europe that we could project to other contingencies, and now that's no longer the case, at least when it comes to some NATO members, that's a problem and has to be examined.' He reiterated that the decision to withdraw troops ultimately lies with the president, and no new announcements have been made.

Rubio also clarified that the partial withdrawal of US troops from Germany affects less than 14% of the total US troop presence there and is part of a pre-planned strategy to shift burdens within NATO.
