It has been just over three months since Brooklyn Beckham launched a scathing attack on his parents, David and Victoria Beckham. In January, the eldest son of the former footballer and Spice Girls star finally addressed long-standing rumors of a major family rift that had been brewing for years. After speculation first emerged in 2022 about a fallout around the time of his wedding to Nicola Peltz, Brooklyn and his wife initially presented a united front with his family. However, last year they began to distance themselves.
The couple were notably absent from key family events, including celebrations for David’s 50th birthday and his knighthood ceremony. Similarly, none of the Beckhams were invited to Brooklyn and Nicola’s vow renewal ceremony last summer. While both sides remained tight-lipped for months, Brooklyn dropped a bombshell statement on social media in January, accusing his parents of being ‘controlling’ and declaring that he was ‘standing up’ for himself and did ‘not want to reconcile’ with them.
What Has Brooklyn Beckham Said About His Parents?
After intense speculation about his relationship with his parents, Brooklyn released a lengthy statement on Instagram in January. He began by saying: ‘I have been silent for years and made every effort to keep these matters private. Unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go to the press, leaving me with no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed.’ He added: ‘I do not want to reconcile with my family. I’m not being controlled, I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life.’
Brooklyn accused his parents of ‘controlling narratives in the press’ about the family, stating that ‘performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been a fixture of the life I was born into’. He claimed he had seen ‘with my own eyes the lengths that they’ll go through to place countless lies in the media, mostly at the expense of innocent people, to preserve their own facade’ and asserted that ‘the truth always comes out’.
He also alleged that his parents had been ‘endlessly trying to ruin my relationship since before my wedding’ and made a headline-grabbing claim about his mother ‘dancing inappropriately’ on him during what was meant to be his first dance with his new wife. Brooklyn also targeted his brothers Romeo and Cruz, saying they ‘attacked’ him on social media before blocking him ‘out of nowhere’. He criticized his family for valuing ‘public promotion and endorsements above all else’, with love ‘decided by how much you post on social media, or how quickly you drop everything to show up and pose for a family photo opp, even if it’s at the expense of our professional obligations’.
Concluding his statement, Brooklyn said that since stepping away from his family, his anxiety had ‘disappeared’, and he now woke up each day ‘grateful’, feeling ‘peace and relief’. Although he has not spoken publicly about his family since, Brooklyn and Nicola have made several pointed digs at his parents, snubbing them on birthdays and ignoring posts reaching out to them on milestone events.
How Have David and Victoria Responded?
After months of silence, Victoria Beckham finally addressed her son’s claims in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. She said: ‘I think that we’ve always – we love our children so much. We’ve always tried to be the best parents that we can be. And you know, we’ve been in the public eye for more than 30 years right now, and all we’ve ever tried to do is protect our children and love our children. And you know, that’s all I really want to say about it.’ She reportedly did not mention Brooklyn by name but responded when asked if she felt guilt or remorse for bringing her children into the spotlight at such a young age. All four Beckham children – Brooklyn, Romeo (23), Cruz (21), and Harper (14) – have spent much of their childhoods pursued by paparazzi and featured on social media.
Victoria added: ‘I wouldn’t say it comes with guilt; I’d say that there was a lot of adjusting from my mum and dad, when all of a sudden there were paparazzi outside their house. We’ve really taken our families on this ride with us.’
A few days after Brooklyn’s statement, David Beckham alluded to the family challenges without naming his son directly. During a live interview on CNBC’s Squawk Box, he shared: ‘I’ve always spoken about social media and the power of social media – for the good and for the bad. They make mistakes. Children are allowed to make mistakes. That’s how they learn. So, that’s what I try to teach my kids, but you have to sometimes let them make those mistakes as well.’
Have Other Family Members Weighed In?
While Brooklyn’s brothers have made pointed digs at him on social media, they have largely avoided speaking about the rift. However, Nicola’s father, billionaire businessman Nelson Peltz, did not hold back. Appearing on stage during the Wall Street Journal Invest Live event in February, the 83-year-old was asked about the ongoing family drama. A reporter linked his experience with ‘negotiating high-stakes situations, particularly playing out in public view’ to the public attention his daughter and her husband have recently faced.
‘Has my family been in the press lately? I haven’t noticed that at all,’ he quipped. When asked if he had offered his family advice on navigating ‘such situations’, he replied: ‘I do. My advice is to stay the hell out of the press. How much good did that do?’ He continued: ‘My daughter and the Beckhams are a whole other story. That’s not for coverage here today, but I’ll tell you my daughter’s great, my son-in-law, Brooklyn, is great, and I look forward to them having a long, happy marriage together.’
