Wisconsin Mosque President Detained by ICE Over Israel Criticism

Wisconsin Mosque Leader Detained by Federal Immigration Agents

The president of Wisconsin's largest mosque has been taken into custody by federal immigration authorities, sparking immediate controversy and accusations of political targeting. Salah Sarsour, a 53-year-old Palestinian-born legal permanent resident of the United States, was detained by nearly a dozen U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Monday in Milwaukee.

According to the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, Sarsour was apprehended after leaving his home. The arrest has drawn sharp criticism from local officials and religious leaders who believe the action was motivated by Sarsour's public statements against Israel and his background as a Palestinian from the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Legal Battle and Allegations of Foreign Influence

Attorneys representing Sarsour have filed a petition seeking his immediate release, arguing that the government's claim that he represents a foreign policy threat has no merit. Instead, they assert that Sarsour was specifically targeted for his criticism of Israel and for a conviction he received as a minor in Israeli military courts.

"Our government should not be doing the bidding of a foreign government," stated attorney Munjed Ahmad, directly referencing Israel. "There's no question in my mind that this is to stifle the discourse on the Palestinian narrative."

The offenses from Sarsour's youth allegedly included throwing rocks at Israeli officers, according to Ahmad. Israeli military courts have faced international scrutiny over allegations of limited due process and disproportionately high conviction rates of Palestinians, though Israel rejects these claims.

Community Outcry and Political Response

Sarsour has served as president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, the state's largest Islamic organization, for five years. He has held a green card for years and resides in the Milwaukee area with his family. His wife and four adult children are all U.S. citizens.

The detention has prompted strong reactions from elected officials. Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson called the arrest "an outrage" in a social media post, stating: "He is a legal permanent resident. There is no substantive evidence he has done anything wrong. This is another example of overreach and harm from the U.S. Immigration authorities."

Attorneys note that Sarsour has no criminal record in the United States. They have compared his case to that of Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia University activist facing deportation on similar foreign policy threat grounds.

Current Status and Legal Proceedings

Sarsour is currently being held at a county jail outside Indianapolis as his legal team pursues his release. Ahmad emphasized his client's determination: "He is ready to fight tooth and nail to make sure that he's not dragged through the mud. He wants to stay in this country."

An email message left with ICE and the Department of Homeland Security on Thursday was not immediately returned. The case continues to develop as supporters call for transparency and due process in what they characterize as a politically motivated detention.
