Ghana's Thomas Partey loses visa appeal in Canada over rape charges
Thomas Partey loses Canada visa appeal over rape charges

Thomas Partey, the Ghanaian midfielder, has had his visa appeal rejected by a Canadian judge after being denied entry to Canada for the World Cup. Justice Roger Lafrenière dismissed Partey's emergency application on Tuesday, upholding the decision of immigration officials. The Black Stars are set to face Panama in Toronto on Wednesday for their opening match of the tournament.

Court Ruling and Immigration Laws

In his judgment, Justice Lafrenière sided with Canada's immigration rules, stating that Partey failed to demonstrate grounds for emergency relief. The judge noted that granting Partey entry would have “lawfully rendered inadmissibility finding and facilitate his entry for a specific event,” which would not align with Canada's immigration policies.

Charges Against Partey

Partey faces seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in the United Kingdom, to which he has pleaded not guilty. He is awaiting trial in London next year. Documents filed in court revealed that Partey had not disclosed these charges when applying for entry into Canada before the tournament.

Partey's Affidavit

In an affidavit, Partey pledged to remain under the supervision of team officials if allowed into Canada and promised to leave according to the tournament schedule. He stated, “I have not been convicted of any offence. I have pleaded not guilty, and I remain presumed innocent.” He also argued that his absence would “materially affect” Ghana's performance, noting that this was Ghana's first World Cup qualification, though they also qualified for the previous tournament in Qatar.

Coach's Response

Ghana's head coach, Carlos Queiroz, expressed readiness to adapt, saying, “We are waiting for a decision. When the decision comes, we are ready. We are ready to make the final approach to the game.” Partey was permitted to enter the United States for training and upcoming matches against England and Croatia in Boston and Philadelphia.
