Reform UK's Jenrick Unveils Migrant Labour Levy

Robert Jenrick, the Reform UK MP, took center stage on Monday to announce his party's controversial plan to impose a levy on employers who hire foreign workers, aiming to lift white British citizens from the bottom of the economic pile. The announcement, made at a sparsely attended press conference, comes amid growing nativist rhetoric from party leader Nigel Farage.

Jenrick's Vision for British Workers

Jenrick, known for his hardline stance on immigration, framed the policy as a defense of native Britons. He argued that foreigners are overwhelming the UK's infrastructure, taking jobs, and forcing locals onto benefits. The proposed levy would apply to employers retaining immigrant staff, with higher rates for lower-paid workers. Jenrick did not specify the levy amount, calling it a detail for later.

The plan would also scrap the employer national insurance hike for British workers, defined strictly as those born in the UK. Jenrick emphasized that even EU workers with settled status or families with British-born children would not qualify, advocating for deportation over family unity.

Criticism and Confusion

Critics quickly pointed out the policy's flaws, noting that many care homes and low-wage sectors struggle to recruit British workers due to poor conditions and pay. The announcement drew comparisons to Jenrick's past controversies, including his role in approving a Tory donor's planning permission and painting over murals at a migrant center.

Jenrick's press conference was delayed by 10 minutes, and he accused Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, of stealing his thunder with a simultaneous event. He portrayed himself and Farage as victims of a system favoring minorities, echoing Farage's recent 6,000-word Substack essay on white British decline.

Farage's Shadow

Farage, who skipped the event, has been lying low after accepting a £5m gift from a Thai crypto-billionaire and owning multiple properties. He has vowed to ban foreign nationals from social housing, further stoking anti-immigrant sentiment.

Jenrick's speech concluded with a call for a social media ban for foreigners, claiming it would help Brits reclaim their identity. The policy, however, left many attendees bemused, questioning whether Jenrick's proposals were serious or satire.
