ICE Agent Fatally Shoots Driver in Houston Traffic Stop

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot a driver during a traffic stop in Houston on Tuesday morning, the agency confirmed. The victim was identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national whom ICE described as an “illegal alien” sought as part of a “targeted enforcement operation.”

Details of the Incident

The shooting occurred around 6:50 a.m. when agents attempted to arrest Salgado Araujo. According to ICE, Salgado Araujo “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer,” prompting the agent to fire in self-defense. The agency stated that the officer’s actions were necessary to protect his life.

However, Salgado Araujo’s son, Ronaldo Salgado, told Telemundo Houston that his father had been out that morning looking to hire workers in the area, contradicting the agency’s characterization of the encounter. Local law enforcement reported that Salgado Araujo was shot in the abdomen and later died at a hospital.

Questions Over Credibility

ICE did not provide evidence to support its account, which mirrors descriptions of previous ICE shootings that were later contradicted by video evidence. Notable cases include the killing of Renee Good in Minneapolis and the shooting of two Venezuelan men in Oregon earlier this year. In April, federal officials claimed a California man “weaponized his vehicle” during a traffic stop, though no officers were struck.

The FBI will take over the investigation, ICE said. The Texas Civil Rights Project condemned the use of force, with president Rochelle Garza stating, “We demand full transparency, an independent investigation into the shooting and any use of racial profiling that led to it, and accountability for the use of deadly force. Our neighborhoods are not battlegrounds.”

Political Reaction

U.S. Representative Sylvia Garcia, who represents Houston, echoed calls for transparency. “All available footage, communications, and other evidence should be preserved and reviewed as part of a full and impartial investigation,” she said. Local reporters and eyewitnesses captured video of the shooting, though the Guardian has not verified the footage.
