Sharp Rise in Hotel Accommodation for Asylum Seekers
New official statistics have confirmed a significant increase in the number of asylum seekers being housed in hotels across the United Kingdom. Data released by the Home Office shows that the summer of 2025 saw a sharp jump in these figures.
Official Figures Reveal Summer Surge
The government data, published on the morning of November 27, 2025, provides a detailed breakdown. By the end of September 2025, there were 4,232 more asylum seekers staying in hotel accommodation compared to the total recorded in June of the same year. This represents a substantial increase over a three-month period.
This surge means the total number of asylum seekers accommodated in hotels reached 36,273 by the end of September. The figures indicate a 13 per cent rise over the summer months. It is important to note that the data reflects the situation at the end of September, and the current number as of late November is not specified in the release.
Government Response and Migration Context
In response to the figures, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood highlighted the broader government stance on migration. She stated, ‘Net migration is at its lowest level in half a decade and has fallen by more than two-thirds under this government.’
However, she acknowledged the strains caused by current migration levels, adding, ‘But we are going further because the pace and scale of migration has placed immense pressure on local communities.’ The Home Secretary also referenced recent reforms announced to the migration system, designed to ensure that those coming to the UK make a net contribution.
The continued use of hotels to house asylum seekers remains a contentious issue, with these latest statistics underscoring the ongoing pressures on the UK's immigration and accommodation systems.
