President Donald Trump welcomed King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the White House on Monday for a state visit that highlighted the enduring alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom. The visit, which included a formal ceremony on the South Lawn, comes amid ongoing trade negotiations between the two nations.
State Ceremony and Diplomatic Talks
The king and queen were greeted with full military honors, including a 21-gun salute and a joint inspection of the honor guard. Trump and King Charles then held private discussions in the Oval Office, focusing on trade, climate change, and global security. Trump praised the UK as a key ally, while the king emphasized the importance of cooperation on shared challenges.
Trade Negotiations Take Center Stage
The visit coincides with the launch of formal trade talks between the US and UK. Trump expressed optimism about reaching a comprehensive trade deal that would benefit both economies. King Charles, in his first state visit to the US as monarch, highlighted the potential for increased investment and job creation.
Melania Trump and Queen Camilla also participated in the visit, attending a luncheon at the White House and later visiting a local school to promote educational exchanges. The first lady and the queen discussed initiatives supporting children's health and the arts.
The state visit is expected to strengthen diplomatic ties, with further meetings scheduled at the British Embassy and a state dinner hosted by the Trumps. King Charles is also set to address a joint session of Congress on Tuesday.
