Zelenskyy Forges Strategic Defence Alliances in Gulf Tour

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy embarked on a significant diplomatic mission to the Gulf region, culminating in a visit to Qatar on Saturday. During this previously unannounced tour, he held a crucial meeting with Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, marking a pivotal step in strengthening international partnerships.

Defence Agreements to Counter Regional Threats

The Gulf state's government confirmed that Qatar and Ukraine signed a defence agreement focused on collaborative efforts to mitigate threats from missiles and drones. This development comes as Iran intensifies its aerial campaign against neighbouring countries, raising security concerns across the Middle East.

Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine has established similar 10-year cooperation frameworks with Saudi Arabia earlier in the week and plans to finalize an agreement with the United Arab Emirates. "We are talking about a 10-year cooperation. We have already signed a relevant agreement with Saudi Arabia, we have just signed a similar agreement with Qatar, also for 10 years, we will sign one with the Emirates," he stated during a press briefing.

Ukraine's Role as a Drone Interceptor Producer

Ukraine has rapidly emerged as a global leader in producing advanced, battle-tested drone interceptors, which are both cost-effective and highly efficient. These systems play a critical role in defending against Russia's full-scale invasion, which began on February 24, 2022. In exchange for providing this expertise, Ukraine is seeking access to high-end air-defence missiles from Gulf nations to bolster its defences against Russian attacks.

Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine aims to build long-term ties with Middle Eastern countries, extending beyond simple sales to include joint production, energy sector cooperation, investment opportunities, and sharing battlefield experience. "Simple sales do not interest us," he explained. "We want systemic relationships, where exporters earn revenue and Ukraine receives sufficient funds to invest in domestic production."

Regional Security and Diplomatic Maneuvers

The Ukrainian leader has strategically leveraged the conflict to offer drone interceptor technology to US allies in the region, dispatching over 200 military experts to facilitate these deals. "Surely no one else can help in this way today, with expertise. No one else possesses such experience," Zelenskyy remarked, highlighting Ukraine's unique position in addressing regional security challenges.

Meanwhile, regional tensions escalated as Iran claimed to have struck a Ukraine-related drone warehouse in Dubai, though Ukraine's foreign ministry dismissed these allegations as false. Concurrently, Russian air attacks in Ukraine resulted in at least four fatalities and damage to critical infrastructure, including a port and a maternity hospital.

In a retaliatory move, Ukraine's military reported striking a major Russian oil refinery in Yaroslavl, causing a fire at a site vital for Russian army logistics. These events underscore the ongoing volatility in the region and Ukraine's proactive efforts to secure international support amidst the protracted conflict.
