US Navy Fighter Jet Destroys Iranian Drone Approaching Aircraft Carrier

The United States military has confirmed that one of its advanced fighter jets shot down an Iranian drone that was aggressively approaching a US aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea last week. According to US Central Command, the incident involved an Iranian Shahed-139 drone flying toward the USS Abraham Lincoln with unclear intent before being intercepted.

Self-Defence Action by F-35C Fighter

Captain Tim Hawkins, a navy spokesperson at Central Command, stated that an F-35C fighter jet from the Abraham Lincoln shot down the Iranian drone in self-defence to protect the aircraft carrier and personnel on board. The spokesperson emphasised that no US service members were harmed and no US equipment was damaged during the engagement.

The dramatic interception was captured in official US navy photographs showing F-35C fighter jets operating from the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea region. These images highlight the carrier strike group's operational readiness in what has become a strategically sensitive maritime area.

Heightened Tensions Amid Diplomatic Efforts

This military confrontation occurred as diplomatic channels were attempting to arrange nuclear talks between Iran and the United States. President Donald Trump remarked that with US warships heading toward Iran, bad things would probably happen unless a deal could be successfully negotiated between the two nations.

In a significant development, Iran's president Masoud Pezeshkian announced on Tuesday that he had instructed the country's foreign minister to pursue fair and equitable negotiations with the United States. This statement represents the first clear indication that Tehran wants to engage in formal discussions with Washington, marking a notable shift in position for the reformist Iranian leader.

Regional Military Buildup and Additional Incidents

The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group forms the most visible component of a substantial US military buildup in the Middle East. This deployment followed a violent crackdown against anti-government demonstrations in Iran last month, which represented the deadliest domestic unrest since the 1979 revolution.

In a separate incident on the same Tuesday, US Central Command reported that Iran's Revolutionary Guards harassed a US-flagged merchant vessel in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. According to Captain Hawkins, two IRGC boats and an Iranian Mohajer drone approached the M/V Stena Imperative at high speeds and threatened to board and seize the commercial tanker.

These developments occur against a complex backdrop where President Trump has demanded nuclear concessions from Tehran while simultaneously deploying naval assets to the region. The American leader stated last week that Iran was seriously talking, while Tehran's top security official Ali Larijani confirmed that arrangements for negotiations were actively underway.
