Two Men Sentenced for High-Speed Lorry Pursuit Involving Multiple Police Forces
Two individuals from Leeds have been imprisoned following a perilous police pursuit that spanned three different police jurisdictions and involved a lorry loaded with stolen tyres valued at more than £40,000. Dean Higgins, aged 35, and Connor Barnett, aged 21, were convicted at Liverpool Crown Court after a dramatic incident that police described as highly challenging and fraught with danger.
Details of the Theft and Pursuit
The sequence of events began in the early hours of December 12 last year in the Woolston area of Warrington, Cheshire. A man sleeping in a heavy goods vehicle was abruptly awakened by loud banging noises emanating from the rear trailer at approximately 2:45 a.m. Upon investigation, he discovered that approximately 500 tyres were being unlawfully removed from his trailer and transferred into another lorry.
Authorities were promptly notified, and the lorry containing the stolen goods departed the scene. The vehicle, which was equipped with false license plates, entered the jurisdiction of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) via the M62 motorway from the M6. At this point, officers from GMP collaborated with Cheshire Police in a covert pursuit to track the suspects.
The Dangerous Chase and Collision
As the lorry proceeded into the West Yorkshire region, it refused to stop for law enforcement, triggering a full-scale pursuit. Higgins, who was operating the vehicle, drove in a dangerous manner, weaving aggressively between traffic lanes. The situation escalated when the lorry collided with a police traffic car, causing it to spin out and crash into the central reservation. The officer inside sustained minor injuries as a result of the impact.
The pursuit continued with aerial support from police helicopters until the lorry, which had been immobilized using a stinger device, lost control and came to a halt near Bradford, West Yorkshire. Higgins and Barnett attempted to flee on foot but were quickly apprehended by responding officers.
Sentencing and Police Response
At Liverpool Crown Court, Dean Higgins received a prison sentence of 27 months after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including theft, driving while disqualified, and dangerous driving. Connor Barnett was sentenced to 14 months in jail after admitting guilt to theft charges.
PC Philip Raymond, a member of GMP's roads policing unit, commented on the incident, stating, This was a highly challenging and dangerous pursuit which involved colleagues from three different police forces. The pair stole thousands of pounds worth of tyres and showed recklessness as they fled, including spinning out a GMP officer - we are fortunate there were not more serious consequences for their actions. He further emphasized that the collaborative efforts of Cheshire, GMP, and West Yorkshire police forces ensured that the perpetrators are now rightly behind bars, highlighting the dedication and commitment of all involved agencies.
The case underscores the risks associated with high-speed chases and the importance of inter-force cooperation in apprehending criminals who endanger public safety.
