Counter-terrorism police are leading an investigation into a third arson attack in north London in less than a month, with the latest incident occurring in Hendon. While authorities are not currently treating this as a terrorist act, they are maintaining an open mind due to striking similarities with recent attacks in the area.
Details of the Latest Incident
Officers were called to the scene just after 10:30 PM on Friday after a witness reported a man approaching a row of shops while carrying a plastic bag. The bag contained three bottles filled with fluid, which the suspect placed near a building in Hendon before attempting to ignite them. When the items failed to fully catch fire, the man fled the area. No arrests have been made in connection with this attack.
Police Response and Statements
Counter Terrorism Policing London is spearheading the investigation, with support from the Metropolitan Police's north-west command area. Commander Helen Flanagan of Counter Terrorism Policing London emphasized that while the Hendon arson is not yet linked to other recent incidents, counter-terror officers are leading the probe due to the resemblances between attacks.
Commander Flanagan stated: "At this stage, last night's arson is not being connected to other incidents in north-west London over the past week or last month's arson in Golders Green. However, counter-terrorism officers are taking charge because of the similarities observed in each attack. I urge anyone with information or footage to contact police immediately. We are committed to relentlessly pursuing those responsible for these hateful acts against London's communities."
Context of Previous Attacks
This incident follows two other arson attacks in the region:
- On March 23, four Jewish community ambulances were torched in Golders Green, approximately two miles from Hendon.
- On Wednesday night, an ignited container was thrown into a Persian media organization's premises in Wembley in an attempted arson attack.

Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, who leads policing in the area, acknowledged the growing fears within the community. He noted that since the Golders Green attack last month, police have engaged extensively with community leaders and increased patrols to reassure residents and deter offenders.
Detective Chief Superintendent Williams explained: "I understand and appreciate the concerns of community leaders, and I recognize that this latest incident will heighten anxieties. Local officers are collaborating closely with Counter Terrorism Policing to support the investigation. The community can expect a heightened police presence, including armed patrols and deployments of officers from Project Servator, who are specially trained to identify individuals planning criminal acts."
