Third Suspect Charged in Sydney Kidnapping and Murder Case
In a significant development, a third individual has been charged with murder in connection with the alleged kidnapping and killing of 85-year-old Sydney resident Chris Baghsarian. Police assert that the incident, which occurred last month, was a case of mistaken identity, adding a tragic layer to the ongoing investigation.
Arrests and Charges in Seven Hills Operation
Early Wednesday morning, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant in the Sydney suburb of Seven Hills, leading to the arrest of two more people: a 23-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman. The operation, conducted by detectives and tactical units around 6:30 a.m., marks a pivotal step in the case.
The man, identified as Deklan Jake Donnelly, faces multiple serious charges. These include murder, taking or detaining in company with intent to ransom occasioning actual bodily harm, possessing a firearm, three counts of supplying a prohibited drug, and failure to comply with a digital evidence access order direction. Authorities have stated that Donnelly is alleged to be one of the principal offenders involved in facilitating the kidnapping, detention, and disposal of Mr. Baghsarian.
Background of the Case
According to police reports, Chris Baghsarian was kidnapped from his North Ryde home on February 13. Investigators believe the abduction was a case of mistaken identity, highlighting the random and violent nature of the crime. His body was later dumped near a golf club in Pitt Town and discovered on February 24, days after the incident.
This case has already seen two other men charged in February: Daniel Stevens, 24, and Gerard Andrews, 29. They were similarly charged with murder and taking or detaining in company with intent to ransom occasioning actual bodily harm. Both Stevens and Andrews remain before the courts as legal proceedings continue.
Evidence and Investigation Details
During the search in Seven Hills, police seized critical evidence, including a firearm, firearm parts, ammunition, four mobile phones (one of which was a DECCD), and a substantial quantity of prohibited drugs. This haul underscores the serious and multifaceted nature of the alleged offenses.
Earlier this month, authorities released CCTV footage showing three men walking towards what they described as the kidnappers' "stronghold" in Dural, located in north-western Sydney, on the night Baghsarian went missing. The footage also captured a blue Hyundai sedan with a missing hubcap, which police believe visited the house where Baghsarian was held captive.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Inquiry
The 23-year-old woman arrested on Wednesday was charged with allegedly breaching an apprehended domestic violence order. Both she and Donnelly were refused bail and remanded in custody. The woman appeared before Blacktown Local Court on Wednesday, while Donnelly is scheduled to appear before the same court on Thursday.
