A three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, announced by President Donald Trump last week, has ended with a fresh wave of Russian strikes. Moscow launched more than 200 attack drones, damaging energy facilities and apartment buildings, and killing at least one person, according to AFP.
Zelenskyy Condemns Renewed Attacks
In a post on X, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that “Russia chose to end the partial silence that had lasted for several days.” He reported that attack drones were shot down in the Dnipro, Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv regions, as well as in Kyiv and the region. Energy facilities, apartment buildings, and a kindergarten were damaged, along with a strike on a civilian locomotive on the railway.
Zelenskyy added that there are reports of injuries and fatalities from these strikes. He emphasized that Ukraine “will respond in kind” to Russian attacks, but reiterated that “Russia must end this war, and it is Russia that must take the step toward a real, lasting ceasefire.” He called for continued and strengthened sanctions against Moscow, urging partners to remain united for security, justice, and reliable peace.
Ceasefire Breakdown
The three-day ceasefire, which began last week, was intended to de-escalate tensions but ultimately failed as both sides accused each other of violations. The latest attacks come as talks are underway in Brussels, though no immediate progress has been reported.
The international community has condemned the renewed violence, with calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to seek support from its allies to bolster its defenses and maintain pressure on Russia through economic sanctions.
