Met Police Chief Inspector Dismissed for Gross Misconduct Over Unauthorised Siren Car Rides
One of the borough's most senior police chiefs has been dismissed for gross misconduct after being found to have "put the public at risk" by speeding around in a police car without possessing the necessary qualifications. Chief Inspector Andrew Du, based at the Central North Command Unit covering Islington and Camden, faced a disciplinary hearing that concluded on Monday, resulting in his immediate dismissal from the Metropolitan Police.
Unauthorised Use of High-Performance Police Vehicle
Three serious allegations were proven against Chief Inspector Du during the hearing. Most notably, he was found to have driven a high-performance police car while activating the sirens and lights without proper authorisation. This reckless behaviour directly endangered public safety and violated established police protocols.
Furthermore, Chief Inspector Du had "misrepresented" his driving qualifications to colleagues and managers by falsely claiming he was qualified to operate the "area car" – a specialized high-performance police vehicle. In reality, he only held basic driver status, making him unqualified for such advanced operational duties.
False Claims About Professional Background
The misconduct extended beyond driving violations. Chief Inspector Du also told colleagues he had previously been posted to the Met's firearms command, when in fact he had never served in that team in any capacity. These false statements further undermined trust within the police force and demonstrated a pattern of dishonesty.
Chief Superintendent Jason Stewart, who leads policing in the Central North area, stated: "Chief Inspector Du's actions fell far below the standard people rightly expect from Met officers. Londoners need to be able to trust that officers are qualified to carry out their roles safely and in accordance with training. Leaders in the Met must uphold the highest standards and lead by example."
Serious Breaches of Professional Standards
The disciplinary panel found that Chief Inspector Du had breached multiple police standards of professional behaviour, including:
- Honesty and integrity
- Orders and instructions
- Discreditable conduct
The panel determined that these violations amounted to gross misconduct of such seriousness that immediate dismissal was justified. As a result of this decision, Chief Inspector Du will be placed on the barred list maintained by the College of Policing.
Career Consequences and Professional Exclusion
Individuals appearing on the College of Policing's barred list face significant professional consequences. They cannot be employed by any police force in the United Kingdom, nor by numerous other policing-related bodies. This measure ensures that those who have demonstrated such serious professional failings cannot continue working in law enforcement roles where public trust is paramount.
The case highlights the Metropolitan Police's commitment to maintaining high professional standards and holding officers accountable for their actions, particularly when those actions compromise public safety and trust in the police service.
