Cold Case Breakthrough: New Witness Emerges in 1993 Canal Murder Investigation

Detectives have issued a fresh and urgent plea for information that could finally solve a mysterious murder case that has remained unsolved for three decades. The investigation into the death of a woman discovered near a canal in 1993 has potentially reached a critical juncture with new witness testimony coming to light.

The Discovery and Initial Investigation

Carol Clark, a 32-year-old woman, was found by a dog walker buried under reeds by the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal on March 28, 1993. The victim had suffered a broken neck and had been strangled to death. Forensic evidence indicated she was wearing only her underwear and boots at the time of discovery, with her distinctive clothing never recovered.

Two days before her body was discovered, Ms Clark had left her boyfriend a note stating she was going to find work and would return home by 2:30 AM. She was last seen getting into a Volvo at approximately 11:30 PM on March 26, 1993, wearing specific clothing including a black baseball cap, brown leather jacket, blue denim mini skirt, black polo-necked jumper, and a plain blue T-shirt.

Case Reopened with New Evidence

Despite an extensive murder investigation at the time, authorities were unable to identify or apprehend any suspects. However, the case was reopened three years ago following testimony from an unnamed witness who reported seeing a woman matching Ms Clark's description walking on the Berkley bypass with two men.

This new information has led to significant developments in the investigation. Two men currently remain under active investigation after being arrested on suspicion of murder: a 69-year-old man from Gloucestershire and a 48-year-old man from Lincolnshire. A third suspect, a 66-year-old man from Newcastle, was also arrested but has since been eliminated from the investigation.

Detective's Appeal on 33rd Anniversary

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Usher has made a heartfelt appeal on the 33rd anniversary of Ms Clark's death. "I am convinced someone out there knows what happened to Carol and we remain committed to doing everything we can to secure justice for her and her family," stated DCI Usher.

He elaborated on the timeline, noting: "We strongly suspect Carol was alive all of Saturday, March 27, 1993, and she was potentially with two men. We also suspect Carol's body will have been left at Sharpness Docks during daylight hours at a time when there were lots of people around celebrating the 200th anniversary of the British Waterways."

The detective emphasized the importance of public assistance, saying: "Carol was wearing distinctive clothing at the time she went missing and so we are once again asking anyone who can recall seeing her that Saturday or seeing anyone behaving suspiciously to contact us. You could have the final piece of the jigsaw which helps us catch those responsible for her death."

Ongoing Commitment to Justice

DCI Usher confirmed that investigators remain in regular contact with Carol Clark's family and are committed to providing them with updates on any significant developments in the case. The renewed appeal comes as authorities hope that the passage of time might encourage individuals with previously withheld information to come forward.

The case represents one of many unsolved murders that continue to challenge law enforcement agencies decades after the crimes were committed. The persistence of investigators and the emergence of new witness testimony demonstrate how cold cases can suddenly develop new momentum, offering hope for resolution and justice for victims and their families.
