Missing RFA Sailor Search Ends Without Success

Extensive Search for Missing RFA Sailor Concludes

A major multi-agency search operation off the coast of Ireland for a missing Royal Fleet Auxiliary sailor has been called off without success, the Ministry of Defence confirmed.

The intensive effort, which concluded on Sunday, 16 November 2025, was launched after the RFA Tidesurge crew member was last seen at approximately 10:30pm on Friday.

Search Area and Coordinated Response

The search was concentrated in the sea off the rugged northwest coast of Ireland, covering the area between Tory Island in County Donegal and Eagle Island in County Mayo.

Defence Secretary John Healey stated: "After an extensive search, it is with deep sadness that we confirm the missing crew member of RFA Tidesurge has not been found." He extended his thoughts to the sailor's family and fellow crew members during what he described as a "tragic time".

Mr Healey also expressed profound gratitude to the Irish authorities, the RNLI, Royal Air Force, and Royal Navy, praising their rapid response and tireless work throughout the search operation.

Privacy Request and RFA Role

No further details regarding the missing crew member have been released publicly. The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that the individual's family has requested privacy.

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary is a vital component of the UK's maritime support, comprising civilian sailors—both officers and ratings—who are employed as civil servants. RFA ships provide essential support to the Royal Navy worldwide, specialising in replenishment and logistics.

This remains a developing story, and further updates are expected to be provided in due course.
