Extensive Search for Missing Sailor Concludes Without Success

An intensive multi-agency search operation off Ireland's northwest coast for a missing Royal Fleet Auxiliary sailor has been called off without success, the Ministry of Defence confirmed on Sunday, 16 November 2025.

The crew member from RFA Tidesurge was last seen at approximately 10:30pm on Friday evening, prompting a major search and rescue mission involving British and Irish emergency services.

Coordinated Search Operation Across Northwest Coast

The extensive search covered the sea area between Tory Island in County Donegal and Eagle Island in County Mayo. The Irish Coast Guard received a distress call before 9am on Saturday from a UK naval support vessel reporting the missing serviceperson.

Search efforts were coordinated by the Irish Coast Guard's maritime rescue sub centre at Malin in County Donegal. The operation involved multiple agencies including the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, RNLI and Irish authorities.

Ireland's department of transport confirmed the deployment included UK naval support vessels, three RNLI all-weather lifeboats from Ballyglass, Arranmore Island and Lough Swilly stations, plus two planes and a helicopter from the Irish Coast Guard.

Official Statements and Investigation

Defence Secretary John Healey expressed his deep sadness at the outcome: "After an extensive search, it is with deep sadness that we confirm the missing crew member of RFA Tidesurge has not been found. My thoughts are with their family during this tragic time, as well as their fellow crew members."

He added his gratitude to the Irish authorities, RNLI, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy who "responded rapidly to this incident and have worked tirelessly on the search."

The Ministry of Defence confirmed the missing individual's family have been informed and have requested privacy during this difficult time. No further details about the crew member have been released.

An investigation into the incident has now been launched, while the ministry confirmed no other individuals were harmed or reported missing during the operation.

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary comprises civilian sailors - both officers and ratings - who serve as civil servants rather than armed forces members, providing vital support to Royal Navy operations.
