Man Found Wandering on M40 Confesses to Girlfriend's Murder
A Polish man who suffocated his girlfriend by wrapping tape across her mouth and nose has been sentenced to life in prison. Norbert Maiksner, 49, was apprehended by officers after they found him wandering alone on the hard shoulder of the M40 in the early hours of April 17 last year.
Details of the Crime
Hours before his arrest, Maiksner had killed his 45-year-old girlfriend, Frances Obiefuleh, at their home in Havant, Hampshire. Upon encountering the officers, Maiksner immediately instructed them to call the police, confessing that he had murdered his girlfriend. DNA analysis later revealed that Ms. Obiefuleh had attempted to defend herself during the attack, but she was ultimately overpowered by Maiksner.
Paul Cavin KC, prosecuting at Portsmouth Crown Court, described the victim's final moments as she fought desperately for her life. He noted that Maiksner had scratches on his chest and back, likely inflicted by Ms. Obiefuleh with her fingers and fingernails as she struggled to survive. A post-mortem examination confirmed that Ms. Obiefuleh died from smothering, with additional injuries caused by compression of her neck and chest.

During the trial, it was disclosed that Maiksner had not attended the proceedings, which proceeded in his absence. A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman stated that Maiksner had told officers he killed Frances, describing the event as a dream from which he wished to awaken. In police interviews, Maiksner refused to answer questions about his partner's death, though he had previously admitted his actions to a Highways officer.
DS Heather Kenwright expressed relief at the sentencing, saying, "I am glad to see Maiksner face a life behind bars for committing the most heinous and evil of acts. He has caused unthinkable suffering to Frances in her last moments and to her family, who must now rebuild their lives without her." She added that while no sentence can bring true justice, she hopes it provides some closure for the family.
Victim's Background and Family Tribute
Ms. Obiefuleh had previously confided in someone she met on a dating app, revealing that Maiksner was sometimes verbally abusive. This type of abuse, while leaving no visible injuries, can intimidate and psychologically harm victims over time. In a statement released through police, her family paid tribute to her, describing Frances as kind, intelligent, and resourceful—a caring mother, sister, aunt, and friend.
"Frances was a devoted mother and beautiful in every sense of the word," the family said. "Someone we love has been cruelly taken from us, and it has changed our lives forever. Her bright light has been dimmed, and we are left shaken, heartbroken, and still processing the grief."
